Sunday 31st May weekly Zoom coffee and chat is at 10.30 as usual.  Click Here . If you prefer to log in from your own Zoom account, the meeting ID is 435 011 359. The service will feature some people’s chosen symbols for the holy spirit and, if you have something that reminds you of the holy spirit, you may like to share that during our zoom time together. If you can wear something red and yellow you will find yourself competing with the Sunday School (previewed in their video).

I want us to end our Zoom meeting by doing what the Sunday School did last week: we will all join hands with those in our household and, if we are on our own, we will stand there holding hands ‘virtually’. Please get as many people as possible to join us on zoom this week. It would be lovely if most of our church family were there as we virtually circle our church with love on what is known as the birthday of the church.

Sunday Service 26th April

This week we continue our exploration of the Acts of the Apostles, the story of the early church. Our reading continues Peter’s sermon in Jerusalem from last week. Sunday School will be following the Gospel reading, which tells the story of meeting Jesus on the road to Emmaus.

Holy Saturday 11th April

Background to this ancient liturgy
This service has its origins in the 4th century Eastern Orthodox church as a night time Vigil of waiting, fasting and prayer.  In the West this came to symbolise the return of the light of Christ and the beginning of the Easter celebration. The service begins with the ‘new fire’ outside, from which a taper is lit. By candlelight 5 nails (representing the 5 wounds of Christ) are inserted into the large Paschal (Easter) candle. Sometimes the nails have incense on the head, and this represents the aromatic spices used to prepare Christ’s body for burial.

The large Paschal candle is lit from the taper with the new fire, and the light is brought into the church. In candlelight, the Exsultet is sung. This is thought to have been written by St Ambrose and, if so, must pre-date his death in 397 AD. Then all the lights come on, and the liturgy continues. The English translation omitted the ancient reference to  the usefulness of bees but, in these ecological times, it is sometimes reinstated; I like the link back to the first monks and nuns who kept this liturgy alive, and probably kept bees. So I’m including the bees this year.

Light now floods the church and the sound of handbells rings out the tidings that Christ has not died, but is risen! We sing the Gloria and hear the first Alleluias, neither of which do we hear throughout the whole of the Lenten season.

Good Friday 10th April

The service for Good Friday is 38 minutes long (video clip below); it includes 14 short readings by members of our congregation, and we have Chris Hartland singing (in four parts!) Jesus Remember Me). Many of us will miss the Procession of Witness, usually led by Richard Thirkell. Colin Moore told me today that he has helped to carry the cross in this procession for 42 years. This year we must find other ways to witness to our faith.

Maundy Thursday 9th April

The Agape meal (video Clip below), which lasts about 14 minutes, you may like to soften the lighting in your room.
We begin in gloom, not completely dark, but softer lighting than usual.
We share a small amount of Wine/Juice, Bread/Water biscuits/Pitta – just a symbolic taste of each.
You may wish to light a candle in your home when I light the candles – but please take care.

I carefully prepared a Sedar dish (… and that’s Hebrew for ‘order’ but refers to the ritual meal held on the first or first two nights of the Passover Festival). There it sits all through our Maundy Thursday Agape Meal – and I meant to explain briefly what the symbolic foods represent, but forgot! They are symbolic and not eaten as part of the meal.

Passion Sunday 29th March

Music in the service  While we are using YouTube it is difficult for us to include any hymns or worship songs whose copyright is still in date. Perhaps it’s an opportunity to google your favourite hymns, and enjoy them at home. This week we are presenting “one we made earlier”.

Mothering Sunday 22nd March

Mothering Sunday (or Mothers’ Day). The bell will be rung at 9.30 am to let the community know that we are still in business, and I will then offer an act of worship on behalf of us all.

Meanwhile, we have made a video of a short family service for Mothering Sunday, which you can all enjoy at home. It includes a quiz, for which all the answers are below. The Service lasts just under 15 minutes.
